Lesson # 3: “The First Commandment – Putting God First,” p. 10-11

Goal: To create an in-depth understanding of the First Commandment


Define the meaning of idolatry (handout)

Provide an example of a person who put God first – Bishop Polycarp

Make a list of modern day idols

Review real life situations where people were challenged to put God first

Worksheet on First Commandment from Luther’s Large Catechism

Field Trip activity (shelter-house) to introduce Second Commandment      

Review Scripture questions to ensure that everyone is understanding the assignment



Workbook:  Complete lesson #4, p. 12-13 entitled, “The Second Commandment – Honoring God’s Name.” Read each question carefully and answer to the best of your ability.

Memory Work: Memorize the books of the New Testament from Matthew through 2 Thessalonians

Memorize the Second Commandment and the meaning [see green box on pg. 12]

Scripture Assignment: Read 1 John 3:11 through 3:24 and write out the answers to the questions on the next page.
